Woman Beats 10-year-old Girl To Death in Lagos

A middle-aged woman, Linda Alapa, has been arrested in Lagos State for allegedly beating her 10-year-old housemaid, Joy Mbafan, to death.

Alapa, before beating the minor to death, was said to have also starved her severally.

The Punch reports that Mbafan lived with the suspect on Bolanle Oduniyi Street, Okegbegun, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

According to the report, the suspect was flogging the girl as punishment for an offence, in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The victim was said to have passed out and died afterwards.

Some residents, speaking on the incident, said they warned Alapa many times to desist from assaulting the victim to no avail.

A neighbour identified only as Ellen said, “She usually beats the girl for messing up their apartment.

“Around 3am on the day the girl died, I heard her crying as Alapa flogged her. I woke my husband up to intervene. He said he was tired of the woman’s insults.

“After a while, she stopped crying. It was when I came back from work that afternoon that I saw a crowd in our premises in tears. They said Mbafan was dead and the woman’s husband was not at home that day.

“It was the landlord that told him about the incident on the telephone,” Ellen added, noting that Mbafan’s father was late while her mother was ill and Alapa had brought her to Lagos from a village in the eastern part of Nigeria.

“But she used to beat up and starve the girl of food. On several occasions, the girl would come to me to eat, saying her aunty did not give her food.”

At the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue where Alapa had gone to deposit Mbafan’s corpse, a doctor on duty was said to have noticed marks of violence on the body and alerted the police at the Sagamu Road Division.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Dolapo Badmos, said, “I confirm the case. The suspect is under investigation while the corpse has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.

“She will be charged to court soon,” she said.

Quran 4:10

(As for) those who swallow the property of the orphans unjustly, surely they only swallow fire into their bellies and they shall enter burning fire.

Proverbs 22:22-23

Don’t steal from the poor, because they are poor. Don’t oppress the needy in the gate. For Jehovah will plead their cause, And despoil of life those that despoil them.

Mathew 18:6

But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Quran 107:1-3

Have you considered him who calls the judgment a lie? That is the one who treats the orphan with harshness, And does not urge (others) to feed the poor.

Quran 4:2

And give to the orphans their property, and do not substitute worthless (things) for (their) good (ones), and do not devour their property (as an addition) to your own property; this is surely a great crime.

Exodus 20:17

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Quran 107:4-7

So woe to those praying ones, Who are careless of their prayers, Those who (want but) to be seen (of men), But refuse (to supply) (even) neighbourly needs.

Ephesians 4:28

Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

Proverbs 21:26

Some people are always greedy for more, but the godly love to give!

Proverbs 28:27

Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to poverty will be cursed.

Quran 2:177

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces to the east and the west [in prayer]. But righteous is the one who believes in God, the Last Day, the Angels, the Scripture and the Prophets; who gives his wealth in spite of love for it to kinsfolk, orphans, the poor, the wayfarer, to those who ask and to set slaves free. And (righteous are) those who pray, pay alms, honor their agreements, and are patient in (times of) poverty, ailment and during conflict. Such are the people of truth. And they are the God-Fearing.”

Al-Bukhari Hadith

A Makhzoomi noblewoman (from the tribe of Makhzoom) stole at the time of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) and Usaamah Ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, wanted to intercede for her. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam (may Allah exalt his mention) became angry and said: “Do you intercede concerning one of the Hadd set by Allah? Those who came before you were destroyed because if a rich man among them stole, they would let him off, but if a lowly person stole, they would carry out the punishment on him. By Allah, if Faatimah Bint (daughter of) Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand.”

Buhari, Ministers Bow To IPOB Threat, Fail To Show Up in Enugu

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday stayed away from the maiden South-East Economic and Security Summit in Enugu, which started about 48 hours after some pro-Biafra agitators warned him not to set foot in Igboland.

Recall the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB had warned the president not to show up at the event.

Buhari was meant to be the Chief Guest of Honour at the summit, which held in the Enugu State Government House, according to the programme of the event.

Although the President was expected at the event, as noted by several speakers who spoke during the event, he did not show up, neither was he represented.

Also, ministers from the South-East, who were slated to make presentations at the event, all stayed away.

A pro-Biafra group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, had in the build up to the summit, issued a statement, warning Buhari to stay away from the South-East, in his own interest.

IPOB, whose leader, and director of pirate radio channel, Nnamdi Kanu, is being held by the Federal Government, accused Buhari of ‘persecution’, and threatened ‘a breakdown of law and order’ should the President attend the summit.

While no mention of the IPOB warning was made throughout the opening session of the summit, Buhari’s absence was a major talking point as several speakers expressed surprise, and confusion, at the development.

Jonathan Disowns Comment on 2019 Elections

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has debunked an online report which claimed that he spoke about 2019 elections in a meeting with his kinsmen in his hometown, Otuoke, Bayelsa state.

A statement issued by Jonathan’s media aide, Mr.Ikechukwu Eze, dismissed the claim as lies, stressing that the former President was neither in his home state on the stated date nor met with his “kinsmen who paid him an end of year visit”, as claimed in the false report.

The statement said further: “Our attention has just been drawn to a fabricated online publication alleging that the former President Goodluck Jonathan made comments on the 2019 elections, while hosting his kinsmen in Otuoke last Tuesday.

“Those reports are false and bear no truth whatsoever. The former President was not in Otuoke on Tuesday, neither did he make the comments attributed to him. In fact, he has only just returned to his community to spend Christmas having been away for two weeks, so he could not have been hosting anyone there last Tuesday.

“Of what good is it to our national development efforts if some people spend so much energy spreading falsehood about fellow citizens and our nation?

“The former President wishes his fellow compatriots a merry Christmas and prosperous New Year in advance, and advises all to always channel their efforts towards working to attain the nation of our collective dreams.”

Biafra: Release Nnamdi Kanu If… – Ekweremadu

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has asked the government to release detained leader of the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu if the court has so ruled.

Ekweremadu stated this at the South East Economic and Security Summit held at the Government House, Enugu, on Thursday.

He frowned at the government’s disobedience to court orders.

He said: “If the court says someone should be released from detention, government must do everything possible to respect”.

Ekweremadu also expressed serious reservations over the exclusion of some parts of the country in some key areas of governance and security architecture of the country.

“Today, as I speak, there is no Igbo man in the commanding heights of our security sector and so they do not attend Security Council meetings. In the top echelon of the governance of this country, the Igbos are absent”.

How We Stopped President Buhari From Coming To Enugu – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has claimed victory over President Muhammadu Buhari’s scheduled visit to Enugu state.

IPOB in a statement circulated on Thursday, December 22, said the group succeeded in preventing president Buhari from attending the South-East Economic and Security Summit (SEESS) in Enugu.

“The indigenous people of Biafra IPOB worldwide and it’s leadership commend the people of Biafra over their supports towards stopping the president Muhamadu Buhari not to attend the economic summit in Enugu today been 22nd December 2016.

“We thank everybody who participated in making these efforts a reality because the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other leadership have drafted 2020 men to Enugu who are ready to die with Buhari today in Enugu.

The IPOB spokesperson Powerful Emma said the global community would have had the opportunity to justify the killings and illegal arrest of its members by the Nigerian government had the president visited.

WWE Survivor Series 2016 results: Goldberg shocks by dominating Lesnar

A good show overall, 2016 Survivor Series provided one of the most shocking endings in recent memory as Goldberg, out of big-time professional wrestling since 2004, beat down WWE's top box office draw Brock Lesnar in just 84 seconds.
This is literally all that happened in the match: Lesnar lifted up Goldberg. Goldberg pushed Lesnar to the ground. Goldberg then speared Lesnar twice in a row and opted not to attempt a pinfall either time. Goldberg finished it by lifting Lesnar into the air, hitting the Jackhammer and earning the 1-2-3.
The finish was absolutely shocking considering the expectation Sunday was that Lesnar, who is on a massive contract with WWE, would get his revenge on Goldberg after falling 12 years ago at WrestleMania XX. Goldberg was believed to be on a one-match contact with WWE as he promotes the WWE2K17 video game, though that may not necessarily be the case considering the finish of this match.
The development leaves a lot of questions hanging out there, most notably the future of Lesnar -- who has run through the entire WWE roster and even handed The Undertaker his lone WrestleMania defeat -- and whether Goldberg will wind up wrestling again.
Check out two-thirds of the match below and the rest of your WWE Survivor Series results:

Full results
Women's 5-on-5 Elimination Match -- Raw (2 survivors) def. SmackDown: The women's match was relatively formulaic for Survivor Series with each team alternating eliminations until Raw pulled away at the end. Before the match began, Nikki Bella was found down hurt in the backstage area, so SmackDown "coach" Natalya took her place. (Of course, a video shown Tuesday on SmackDown will likely prove that Natalya was behind the attack, starting a feud.) Sasha Banks found her way out of the match earlier than expected, as did Nia Jax, who had the spot of the match with a double single-arm suplex on Alexa Bliss and Becky Lynch. Ultimately, it was Raw that prevailed as Jax -- after her elimination -- took Lynch out at ringside, giving Raw a two-on-one advantage to first pin Bliss and then eliminate an injured Lynch. Bayley clinched the victory by pinning Lynch, only to be attacked by Charlotte after the match.
Survivors: Charlotte, Bayley (Raw)
Order of elimination: Carmella (SD) --> Alicia Fox (Raw) --> Naomi (SD) --> Sasha Banks (Raw) --> Natalya (SD) --> Nia Jax (Raw) --> Alexa Bliss (SD) --> Becky Lynch (SD)

Intercontinental Championship -- The Miz (c) def. Sami Zayn via pinfall to retain the title: The stipulation on this match was that the IC title would flip over to Raw should Zayn claim the belt from Miz. There was some good action in this one with Zayn eventually gaining the upperhand via a Blue Thunder Bomb. When Zayn attempted to submit Miz via the Figure Four Leg Lock, Maryse (Miz's real-life wife) ran over to the scorekeeper's table and rang the ring bell. This led Zayn to believe he had won via submission. Instead, while Zayn was confused, Miz rolled him up from behind to earn the 1-2-3 and retain the title. The championship will stay on SmackDown, which is the best booking decision WWE could make.

Tag Team 10-on-10 Elimination Match -- Raw (1 survivor) def. SmackDown: While most of the early eliminations were not much of a surprise, New Day going out so early was confusing at first. Eventually it became obvious that WWE was trying to use this as a spotlight for some of its newer teams, which it accomplished. The Usos continue to look really strong as heels, and they should absolutely be the team to take the SmackDown titles off Slater and Rhyno when that time comes. The finish was also solid. Cesaro had Jey Uso locked in the Sharpshooter, and just as Jimmy Uso was about to interfere, Sheamus stepped in with a Brogue Kick to allow Cesaro to get the submission victory.
Sole survivor: Cesaro & Sheamus (Raw)
Order of elimination: Breezango (SD) --> The New Day (Raw) --> The Hype Bros (SD) --> The Shining Stars (Raw) --> American Alpha (SD) --> Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson (Raw) --> Heath Slater & Rhyno (SD) --> Enzo Amore & Big Cass (Raw) --> The Usos (SD)

Cruiserweight Championship: The Brian Kendrick (c) def. Kalisto via disqualification:The stipulation on this match was the entire cruiserweight division would move to SmackDown if Kalisto won. Kendrick dominated the early going and locked in the Captain's Hook submission finisher not once but twice on Kalisto, only for the challenger to eventually find the ropes. Kalisto then took over by hitting the Salina Del Sol, though he was unable to capitalize with a splash as Baron Corbin jumped into the ring to attack both men. Corbin, who is on SmackDown, cost Kalisto the title and his brand the division.

Men's 5-on-5 Elimination Match -- SmackDown (2 survivors) def. Raw: Credit to WWE for booking an interesting classic Survivor Series match with big names eliminated early and a finish that most likely did not expect considering the competitors involved in the contest. Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles were each eliminated, in large part, due to attacks from one another that Raw took advantage of through the match. Braun Strowman, after taking a flying elbow drop on an announce table via Shane McMahon, was counted out when SmackDown "mascot" James Ellsworth grabbed Strowman's foot from under the ring apron and did not allow him back into the ring. Owens was actually eliminated via disqualification for entering the ring without a tag and using the List of Jericho. It only took moments for Chris Jericho to follow him out of the ring as he was distracted by gathering the discarded papers of the List strewn across the ring and prey for an RKO outta nowhere from Randy Orton.

The highlight of the match, of course, was McMahon, who received some spotlight as he beat on Reigns and Rollins one after another. McMahon set up for a Van Terminator on Reigns but was thwarted when Reigns stood up and speared McMahon. The referee began counting but did not get to three; he declared McMahon eliminated and trainers entered the ring to help him out. It was unclear as to whether there was a legitimate medical concern for McMahon, though WWE said after the match that he was OK.

The aforementioned attack by an eliminated Ambrose led to a temporary reformation of The Shield, which powerbombed the world champion through the Spanish announce table. Styles was rolled back into the ring and pinned, leaving Rollins and Reigns against Orton and Bray Wyatt. Orton just hit an RKO on an airborne Rollins, who jumped from the top rope hoping to splash Wyatt. Just as it looked like Reigns was taking the upperhand, Orton shoved Wyatt out of the way of a spear, taking the brunt of the hit and allowing Wyatt to hit Sister Abagail for the 1-2-3 and final elimination.

Survivors: Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton (SmackDown)
Order of elimination: Dean Ambrose (SD) --> Braun Strowman (Raw) --> Kevin Owens (Raw) --> Chris Jericho (Raw) --> Shane McMahon (SD) --> AJ Styles (SD) --> Seth Rollins (Raw) --> Roman Reigns (Raw)

Meet Kellyanne Conway, the first woman to run a victorious presidential campaign

President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign manager is now the first woman to lead a winning presidential campaign in the United States.Kellyanne Conway moved up from Trump’s senior adviser and pollster to campaign manager in mid-August when the previous campaign manager was dropped by Trump.

With more than 20 years of polling and research experience, Conway worked for congressional candidates and, more recently, as president of the Keep the Promise I, a PAC that advocated for former Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz.

Conway is a mother of four young children, Conway was Trump’s third campaign manager, and the first woman ever to run the campaign of a GOP presidential nominee.

She said:

“I wasn’t hired because of my gender. But it’s a special responsibility,” Conway told CNN. “I want to do right, apart from my gender — I want to do right as a campaign manager.”

The Trump campaign was “very confident” about the election, Conway said on NBC after Trump’s victory.

“Trump is a problem-solver. He’s a builder,” she continued. “When you are a businessman, you are accountable. You can’t run your business with $19 trillion worth of debt like the federal government does somehow.”

Nigerian footballer and Fulham FC foward, Omatsone Aluko named English Championship Player of the Month

Nigerian and Fulham FC winger, Omatsone Folarin Aluko, has been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the month for October. The 27-year-old scored a solo effort against Barnsley, then had a hat-trick of assists in a memorable display against Huddersfield.

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic said:

“I am very happy for Sone getting this award as he has worked hard for the team over the past months, so it is a good reward for him.

“We have seen an improvement to our results of late, so it is also a reflection on the whole team, and I want that hard work to continue so that many of my players will be eligible for this award in future months.”

Aluko said it’s a great feeling to be recognised with this award.

“It’s a nice feeling to be publically rewarded for your efforts. Ultimately I think it’s a team award. I wouldn’t get this award if the team weren’t winning and it’s a credit to my team-mates and all the staff who have provided me with a platform to play well on. The results have gone our way recently and because of this I’ve been able to show my best form.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said:

“It’s great to see Sone doing so well under Slavisa Jokanovic at Fulham after he was so unlucky with injuries at Hull.

Born in England, Aluko was capped by England at all levels up to under-19 before accepting an offer to play for Nigeria. His sister, Eniola Aluko is also a professional footballer who plays for Chelsea Ladies and England Ladies.

Taliban Militants Attack German Consulate In Afghan City, Four Killed

Taliban militants stormed the German consulate in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif, ramming its outer wall with a truck bomb before battling security forces in an overnight attack that killed at least four people, officials said.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the building, a NATO spokesman said, but Germany indicated on Friday this would not deter it from continuing its work as part of the international mission in Afghanistan.

Triggered by a suicide bomber, the blast shattered windows as far as 5 km (3 miles) away, NATO said. A local doctor said it and the subsequent firefight also wounded 120 people.

Trump allegedly erases threat to deport Nigerians from website

The media team of US president-elect Donald Trump’s team has reportedly removed the statement on his website to deport Nigerians from the country if he becomes president.

This comes even as his team also deleted the statement on his website to ban Muslims from entering the US.

It was gathered that the page now redirects to another page encouraging voters to donate to his campaign, New Telegraph reports.

Trump and his allies had consistently defended the ban, insisting the measure was about Americans’ “safety” and not about discriminating against religion.

The said post was made on December 7, 2015 on his website.

Recall there were reports earlier this year that Trump had sent a subtle warning to the Nigerian Community in the US, after he said all Nigerians would be made to leave the country if he becomes President.

He reportedly made the ‘threat’ during a rally at Wichita, Kansas, saying Nigerians and Mexicans have taken all the jobs meant for honest hard working Americans.

He was quoted to have said: “We need to get the Africans out. Not the blacks, the Africans. Especially the Nigerians. They’re everywhere.

“I went for a rally in Alaska and met just one African in the entire state. Where was he from? Nigeria! He’s in Alaska taking our jobs. They’re in Houston taking our jobs. Why can’t they stay in their own country? Why? I’ll tell you why. Because they are corrupt.

“Their governments are so corrupt, they rob the people blind and bring it all here to spend. And their people run away and come down here and take our jobs! We can’t have that! If I become president, we’ll send them all home. We’ll build a wall at the Atlantic Shore. Then maybe we’ll re-colonize them because obviously they did not learn a damn thing from the British!”

Doctors to stop helping people if government won't pay salaries

Bayelsa doctors are in despair as their autumn salaries are yet to be paid

The protesting medics demand the federal government to pay them as soon as possible

They even said they are considering MMM as an option to feed their families

Last week hundreds of doctors took to the streets of Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, to protest against unpaid four-months salaries owed them by the federal government.

The desperate medics even threatened to stop providing medical care to patients giving November 15 as the last date to repay all the debts.

The Association of Resident Doctors have recently met the Federal Medical Centre authorities to discuss the issue, however, the results left a lot to be desired.

The doctors led by Dr. Nonso Okoye, their chairman, were seen carrying placards saying “Our families are hungry”, “FG pay our salaries” and “We are hungry, MMM is becoming an option”‎.

10 Die Of Diarrhoea In Abuja, Nigeria

No fewer than 10 lives have been lost to the recent outbreak of diarrhoea in Wassa community, Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Nigerian capital, FCT.

Rilwanu Mohammed, the Executive Secretary, FCT Primary Healthcare Development Board, said this at the flag-off of the third round of polio outbreak vaccine response on Friday in Abuja.

Mr. Mohammed also disclosed that the disease affected 38 people in the community.

He said the incidence happened at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in the area.

The executive added that the disease broke out on November1, and that the victims were being treated by the board, stressing that the situation is under control.

He said all the children in the community have been vaccinated and the two boreholes in the area decontaminated with chlorine gas.

Mr. Mohammed said people the in the community were encouraged to avoid open defecation and embrace healthy and hygienic life style.

He added that the board had trained the community on the best way to wash hands using soap and ash.

According to him, hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of many types of infection and illness in all settings.

“Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community,’’ he said.

The scribe said the flag-off campaign in Wassa was to ensure that all eligible children in the area were vaccinated.

“We observed that there was an influx of new people from Monguno and Gwoza in Borno state with their children that were previously vaccinated,’’ he said.

He added that third round campaign will commence on November 12 and end on Tuesday November 15.

He said the exercise targets 900,000 children across the Federal Capital Territory.

“We have trained 1,688 personnel to conduct the exercise and we have the support of 75 additional people from the National Primary Healthcare Development Board; we also have 78 supervisors and 37 monitors,” he said.

Muhammad Bello, the Abuja minister, assured that the FCT administration was committed to elimination and eradication of polio in Nigeria.

Mr. Bello, represented by Alice Ojey-Achu, acting Secretary, Human and Health Resources Secretariat, said there would be adequate support to the programme to ensure effective implementation of the exercise in the FCT.

“With the coverage below the minimum acceptable 90 per cent in September round of the immunisation, increasing to 98 per cent in the October round.

“FCT has demonstrated progressive improvement in quality of the implementation of the sub-national immunisation plus days,” he said.

Robbers Kill Bank Manager, Security Man In Ekiti

Robbers invaded the rustic town of Otun-Ekiti in Moba Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Thursday and killed four persons in simultaneous attacks that included two banks.

It was learnt that policemen at the scene fled from the firepower of the armed robbers who laid siege to the entire town for about an hour.

The victims of the attacks were the manager and cashier of a commercial bank, a security man at another commercial bank and the night guard to the town’s monarch, Oba Adedapo Popoola.

A Punch correspondent gathered that the security man was to get married in two weeks’ time before he met his untimely death.

The Oore Otun, Oba Popoola, said the attack was akin to a war against the community, with gunshots and explosives deployed all over the town.

“It happened around 6pm on Thursday evening. I was relaxing with my chiefs in front of the palace when we heard what first sounded like some fireworks and we dismissed it as some of the children’s antics as a result of the festive period.

“But later, we heard heavier and more shocking sounds that resembled gunshots and explosives. That was when we realised that it was no child’s play.

“Gunshots and explosives were all over the place and heard from all corners. I couldn’t situate the incident, as we ruminated whether it was robbery, Boko Haram’s attack or some kind of war happening.

“We later learnt that the robbers mounted their men at the four entrances into the town: the roundabout at Orimope Road; outside Moba LGA secretariat; in front of my palace and in front of the Technical College outside the town on the way to Kwara.

“The sporadic gunshots and explosives lasted for about an hour before the dust settled. And by that time, four people had died.

“They manager and cashier of a bank, a security man at another bank and my night guard who had just resumed for night duty and wanted to close the gate.”

The king said he quickly contacted Governor Ayodele Fayose, who immediately mobilised security agencies to the town, but the robbers had left before their arrival.

When contacted, the Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alberto Adeyemi, confirmed the report.

He said the Police had deposited the remains of the victims at Usi-Ekiti General Hospital, while investigation had begun.

Skye Bank Plc has taken over control of the assets of Obat Oil in Apapa Business District of Lagos State on Friday.

Obat Oil is owned by flamboyant business magnate and Olugbo of Ugboland in Ondo State, Oba Fredrick Obateru-Akinruntan.

This follows an October 28, 2016 ruling of a Federal High Court in Lagos over an outstanding debt to the Bank in excess of N1.5 billion by Obat Oil.

US Judge Rules Against President-Elect Donald Trump

U.S. Federal judge, Gonzalo Curiel, on Thursday in San Diego, California, largely sided with plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit against President-elect Donald Trump over the defunct Trump University.

The case is scheduled to go to trial later this month and Trump is expected to testify in his own defence against allegations that Trump University for-profit business seminars were a hoax and hundreds of individuals were charged large sums of money for courses that were essentially worthless.

Judge Curiel ruled against Trump’s legal team seeking to ban testimony relating to Trump’s conduct during the presidential campaign.

Mr. Curiel also ruled against Trump’s request to ban testimony about Trump University’s “F” rating by the Better Business Bureau and the fact that it has since gone bankrupt.

He also denied a request by Trump’s lawyers to ban discussion of the financial condition of students, many of whom described themselves as poor, and what impact the seminar fees had on their lives.

Mr. Curiel ruled in favour of allowing Trump’s defence team to call students who would tell “success stories” about how the courses improved their understanding of business and real estate.

The trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 28.

Family of Lagos traditional ruler paid N15.1m ransom to kidnappers for his release

The traditional ruler of Iba Town, Oba Goriola Oseni admitted that his family paid N15.1 million to free him after the kidnappers initially demanded N500 million ransom.

The monarch stated this on Friday, November11th, while giving evidence before the Lagos High Court sitting at Igbosere as the trial of four suspects, who kidnapped him begins.

The defendants, Duba Furejo, Ododowo Isaiah, Reuben Anthony and Yerin Fresh, who were first arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo on October 24, are standing trial on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, robbery, armed robbery, stealing and kidnapping preferred against them by the Lagos State Government.

The defendants and others still at large, murdered a security guard, Sunday Eniola Okanlawon and a commercial motorcyclist, Joseph Okeke and also attempted to murder the traditional ruler’s wife, Olori Abosede Oseni.

Led in examination by the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem (SAN), who led a team of lawyers for the state, the 73-year-old monarch narrated how he was kidnapped by nine heavily armed men at his palace while watching TV oat about 8pm, on July 16th.

“This is the king,’ the gunmen said. I asked them, ‘what can I do for you?’ Then they grabbed me. I was in only a boxer because I was preparing to take a bath. My Olori (Queens) came in and asked them where they were taking me to but they fled when the gunmen released some bullets in the decking of the room,” Oseni told the court.

He further narrated how the gunmen dragged him out of the palace and shot sporadically, in the process, killed his security guard and a motorcyclist. They also shot at one of his wives.

“They started pushing me and shouting ‘trek, trek’, till I fell and injured my arm. Mt toe was also forcibly removed, so they carried me,”

The suspects took him to a speedboat where he was driven away to a riverine camp with about 50 militants. The next day, he was taken to a bigger camp with six buildings and more of the militants. He said they demanded N500 million ransom but his family paid N12 million and then another N3.1million to another group of the kidnappers, totalling N15.1million after he was released.

The Oba’s son, Prince Kazeem, who testified as the second prosecution witness, said he delivered both ransom money of N12m and N3.1m to the abductors at a canal near Igbehinadun in Iba, adding that they negotiated the ransom from N500m to N40m but they couldn’t raise that amount, especially after the government refused to pay any ransom. The militants gave him directions to the drop off point on phone after warning him not to tell anyone.

Justice Taiwo adjourned the case till November 18, following a request by the prosecution for time to present more witnesses.

Richard Branson – What Message Does Trump’s Victory Send to Young People?

Founder of Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson has written a reflective piece on Donald Trump’s victory at the US Polls.

Read Piece below:

Watching the US election results come in, I couldn’t help but think of my grandchildren. As so many parents and grandparents must be thinking, what kind of world do we want our children to grow up into? What type of message does Trump’s victory send to young people about the behaviours, principles and attitude to others required to succeed in life?

My biggest concerns include the possibility of an increasingly reactionary Supreme Court, while hard-earned progress on equality, women’s rights, immigration and climate change are at risk.

The last 12 months have shown just how divided Americans are on nearly any social and economic issue today. The tone of the campaign trail has reinforced that division. The vicious personal attacks and stinging barbs have made me wonder if political discourse can sink any lower than this.

However, now is not the time to create more division. We do so sadly, but have to accept the outcome of the election. We must hope that some of Trump’s rhetoric was just that and common sense and the checks of the democratic system will prevail. American leadership in this multipolar world has never been in greater demand – whether to fill the vacuum of power gradually devastating Syria and Iraq and forcing more refugees to flee their countries. Or to help move the world’s leading economies from climate talk to climate action and to conserve the ocean from irreparable damage – perhaps two of the most daunting challenges the world has ever faced.

Yet America can only rise to the challenge if she stands united. A divided nation cannot lead, nor can it inspire. My parents often talked with great admiration of the “Greatest Generation” of World War II, a generation that came together as one in a time of great crisis, harnessing its fantastic strength for the greater good, setting aside differences and seeking common ground across the entire political spectrum.

“It became the America that was greeted as a liberator and moral authority the world over; the America that welcomed the world’s refugees, the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free” with open arms. It took on those humanitarian duties and seized the tremendous economic and social benefits of an open and positive society for decades. It was America that put a man, twelve men in fact, on the moon, demonstrating that a shared vision and purpose can move mountains.

At its best, America is a democracy that thrives on constructive discourse and functioning checks and balances; not on misinformation, hate, and stubborn obstruction. It is a country that has prospered by welcoming the world to shape their lives there and follow the American dream. The words of two great American leaders come to mind:

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

“‘And this, too, shall pass away.’ How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! – how consoling in the depths of affliction! ‘And this, too, shall pass away.’” – Abraham Lincoln.

Momentous challenges lie ahead to heal the divide and reinvigorate the belief and faith in the political system. This election has undoubtedly caused lasting damage, both to America’s collective psyche and to the political will of its leaders to collaborate. But there is much to be done: to protect democratic processes, to stand up to intolerance, and to support each other in these challenging times. After all, it is not up to one man to shape the world we live in – it is up to all of us.”

Photo: Yoruba, Egun Youths Clash In Lekki

No fewer than 200 structures were burnt on Wednesday in Otodo Gbame, an Egun community in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State, during a clash between some Egun and Yoruba youths.

Punch Metro learnt that the crisis started on Sunday, when the Yoruba youths demanded that the residents should relocate from the area.

It was gathered that the Egun community insisted that residents would not leave their houses, tagging the youths as hoodlums and land grabbers.

A Punch correspondent gathered that the crisis came to a head on Wednesday when the Yoruba youths set fire to the structures in the area at about 8am.

The action was said to have triggered a clash between the youths of the Egun community and their Yoruba counterparts.

Two persons were said to have been injured during the clash, while the area was quickly deserted as the fire raged. Some residents reportedly salvaged their property from the fire and fled.

It was learnt that policemen from the Rapid Response Squad, the Maroko division and the Area J Command, Ajah, went to the area to restore normalcy.

A policeman on the team said an abandoned two-day-old baby was rescued from one of the burning structures.

He said, “When the structures were set ablaze, the mother and the father of the baby fled. It was the cry of the baby that drew the attention of policemen to that room. The baby was locked inside the house. The baby was rescued and reunited with her parents.”

“Nobody was killed, but about three persons were injured. The entire community was razed.”

A resident, who identified himself only as Hunsu, said, “The crisis started on Sunday. Some people came and said they had bought our land and we should relocate. We did not know that the hoodlums would go to this extent.

“The crisis escalated on Wednesday when they invaded the community and set fire to our property. All my belongings are gone. My wife and children are homeless.”

A Punch correspondent learnt that the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, went to the area around 2pm and held a peace meeting between the leaders of the two groups.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said five suspects were arrested in connection with the crisis.

She said, “The command received a report that the Egun and Yoruba communities were engaged in a serious brawl over land issue. Upon receipt of the information, the command operatives from the RRS and men of the Area J Command moved in. Some shanties being occupied by the residents were set ablaze by the warring factions.

“A baby was rescued from the one of the houses. Five suspects were also arrested in connection with the fracas. The CP visited the scene and promised that everyone involved in the clash would be duly prosecuted.”

President Obama Speaks: I am Rooting for Donald Trump’s Success

United States President Barack Obama has promised to ensure a smooth transition of power from him to president-elect, Donald Trump.

The differences between Trump and him will not affect the transfer of power, he said.

“It is no secret that the president-elect and I have some pretty significant differences. But remember that eight years ago, President Bush and I had some pretty significant differences.

“The presidency and vice presidency are bigger than any of us.

“We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading this country. The peaceful transfer of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy.”

He also described Hillary Clinton’s candidacy as historic.

“I could not be prouder of her… I am proud of her. A lot of Americans look up to her… Her candidacy and nomination were historic..

“Everybody is sad when their side loses their election. But the day after, we have to remember that we’re actually all on the same team…. we’re patriots first.

“That’s what I heard when I spoke to [Trump] directly, and I was heartened by that. That’s what our country needs. … I hope that he maintains that spirit throughout this transition and I certainly hope that’s how his presidency has a chance to begin.”

EFCC Grills Ex Attorney General, Aondoakaa Over $182m Halliburton Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday grilled a former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa (SAN), for his alleged role in the $182m Halliburton scandal.

It was learnt that Aondoakaa, who served as AGF under the late President Umaru Yar’adua, arrived the office of the EFCC around 10am and was grilled for about eight hours.

As of 7pm, he was still in EFCC custody, an indication that he may spend the night at the commission.

A source at the anti-graft agency said, “Aondoakaa has been in our custody since morning and has been answering questions on his alleged role in the Halliburton scandal. More details will be revealed later.”

Aondoakaa’s alleged involvement in the scandal could not be immediately ascertained as of press time.

However, he had been accused of frustrating investigations into the case during his time as the AGF between 2007 and 2010.

The Halliburton case relates to an alleged $182m contract involving a four-company joint venture to build a liquefied natural gas plant on Bonny Island.

Earlier in 2009, KBR, a former subsidiary of Halliburton, agreed to pay $402m after admitting that it bribed Nigerian officials, and Halliburton paid $177m to settle allegations by the US Securities and Exchange Commission without admitting any wrongdoing.

In mid-December 2010, the case was settled when Nigeria agreed to drop the corruption charges against the company’s former boss, Dick Cheney (and former US Vice-President); and Halliburton in exchange for a settlement of over $200m settlement.

However, no Nigerian official involved in the scandal has been jailed.

The Office of the AGF under the leadership of Mohammed Adoke (SAN) set up a team of five lawyers which would ensure the swift recovery of the funds.

However, $26m was said to have been paid to the lawyers as legal fees to the lawyers under controversial circumstances.

The lawyers include a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Joseph Daudu (SAN); Emmanuel Ukala (SAN), Chief Godwin Obla (SAN), Mr. Damian Dodo (SAN) and Mr. Roland Ewubare, who have all been quizzed by the commission.
