Abakaliki Traders Speak, We Miss Jonathan

Almost one and a half years after former President Goodluck  Jonathan left office, his 2015 campaign posters are still displayed in markets in Ebonyi State, including the over 70-year-old Abakaliki main market.

Speaking to a Punch correspondent on Thursday, one of the traders, Celestine Chikodiri, said the traders resolved to retain the posters as a show of love for the former President.

He said, “We like the way Jonathan ruled us; his government was good, we like the Jonathan administration more than the present government and it is why we decided to leave the posters in the market because we are missing him.

“If you look around the market, you will not see campaign posters of any presidential candidate other than Jonathan’s own.

“The Jonathan administration will not be easily forgotten; things were moving smoothly, our businesses were flourishing, civil and public servants were patronising us,’’ he said.

Chikodiri described Jonathan as a true democrat for conceding defeat at the presidential election which he said was another reason the traders allowed his campaign posters to still remain in the market and called on politicians to emulate him.

Another trader in the market, Mrs. Nwode Angelina, said the current hardship being experienced in the country had shown that Jonathan was a good ‘husband’ to the nation.

“Today, everybody has seen that he tried for the nation and I am not surprised that his campaign posters are still littering our market.”

Boy who lived 18 years with tail finally has it removed

An 18-year-old boy has secretly lived with 18cm tail his entire life

The teen’s parents believed the outgrowth is a good luck charm

The youngster suffered from extreme pain and developed psychological problems

The abnormality was successfully removed by surgeons

An unnamed boy in India has lived most of his life suffering from constant discomfort and pain.

The 18-year-old was born with condition called neurodevelopment abnormality, which caused a tail growing from his back.

Surprisingly but his family didn’t want to remove the exessive tissue believed it was a good luck charm and even helped to hide it.

However, when pain became unbearable the boy’s parents eventually took him to Super Specialty Hospital in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

According to doctors, the condition can be detected and operated on soon after birth  but in this case relatives became victims of superstition and social stigma.

Luckily, a team of doctors managed to successfully remove the painful 18cm tail (believed to the longest ever reported) earlier this week.

Dr Pramod Giri, the head of the neurosurgery department, at the hospital, said: “This is an extremely rare case and we have not seen such an abnormality here before.

He was admitted only after he complained of extreme pain in his lower back, problems while sleeping and sitting.

The boy was also suffering from an extreme psychological issue because the tail was growing so he had to always adjust the tail in his cloths when sitting.

The family was always aware but they ignored it and did not see a doctor as they were superstitious and considered it to be a good luck charm for the boy.

They hid his condition all these years worrying about the social stigma and also because it was not creating any health issue for him until now.

He is very happy. He is now very comfortable while sleeping and sitting. He says he feels more confident about himself now.”

US Drones To Bomb Northern Nigeria

There are strong indications that the United States government may launch attacks against Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East, as a drone base being constructed in the Niger Republic would soon be completed.

According to reports, the American drone base is under construction in Agadez, a town in Niger.

The facility is expected to offer US military, greater ability to use drones against Islamist extremists in countries like Libya, Mali and Nigeria.

But some security experts told SUNDAY PUNCH that such drone attacks against insurgents in the North might kill innocent people.

The project, considered to be the United State’s most important military construction effort in Africa, according to secret files obtained by an online medium, The Intercept, will gulp $100m.

The construction of the base is an indication that the US is paying more attention to terrorist groups in Nigeria and other countries on the African continent.

“As the only country in the region willing to allow a US base for MQ-9 Reapers — a newer, larger, and potentially more lethal model than the venerable Predator drone — Niger has positioned itself to be the key regional hub for US military operations, with Agadez serving as the premier outpost for launching intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions against a plethora of terror groups,” The Intercept said.

The Americans have for years operated an air base in Niamey, Niger’s capital, but in September 2014 the US African Command announced plans to build a drone facility for “Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance.”

The documents obtained by The Intercept and made available online stated, “The top MILCON [military construction] project for USAFRICOM is located in Agadez, Niger to construct a C-17 and MQ-9 capable airfield.

“Remotely Piloted Aircraft presence in Africa supports operations against seven (Department of State)-designated foreign terrorist organisations.

“Moving operations to Agadez aligns persistent ISR to current and emerging threats over Niger and Chad, supports French regionalisation and extends range to cover Libya and Nigeria.”

Reacting to the development, a member of the American Society of Industrial Security, Prof. Femi Adegbulu, told SUNDAY PUNCH that there was a possibility of collateral damage, should the US launch drone attacks against Boko Haram in the North.

He said, “There are two sets of drones, one for surveillance and the other for attacks. A reconnaissance drone is used for intelligence gathering, while the other kind of drone is used for attacks. There is no 100 per cent accuracy in warfare.

“You lose lives, money, time, and resources. The possibility of collateral damage cannot be ruled out, especially since Boko Haram terrorists are known to use humans as shields when attacked.”

Similarly, a former Director, Department of State Services, Mike Ejiofor, told one of our correspondents that he was concerned about the US military’s plan to launch attacks against Boko Haram from Niger.

“I am worried that the US military will be making such efforts to launch attacks against Boko Haram from outside Nigeria. If the US did not get the nod from the Federal Government to establish its drone base in the country, how could the US military launch attacks against Boko Haram from Niger Republic?”

When the spokesman for the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Charles Nwodo, was contacted at 3pm, he asked one of our correspondents to give him till 6pm to respond to the story.

However, when he was called again at 6pm, he did not pick the calls placed to his telephone line. Also, Nwodo had yet responded to a text message sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

Army releases 348 suspected Boko Haram detainees

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army on Saturday freed 348 suspected Boko Haram members as a gesture to celebrate the country’s 56th Independence anniversary.

The detainees included 114 male, 107 female and 127 children.

They were handed over to the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, at the Ramat Square, Maiduguri by the acting General Officer Commanding, the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Victor Ezegwu.

Ezegwu explained that the suspects were arrested at various camps and havens of the insurgents in Borno State.

He said they were investigated and found to be innocent of involvement in insurgency.

He also said 115 out of the 127 children among the suspected insurgents were between the ages of five and 10, while 12 of them were 11 years and above.

He however, said some suspects, including six foreigners who illegally entered Nigeria, would be prosecuted.

He added that the suspected insurgents had been handed over to the Police and the Department of State Services.

He said the foreigners comprised of four Cameroonians, a Chadian and a Jamaican, who would be separately handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service for deportation.

Nigerian Man Roasts Corns In Dubai For A Living (Photo)

This Man roasts maize in Dubai as a delicacy and sells them to passersby.

In an exclusive chat with Anambra State Online Media, he opened up to us on how he started the business and the benefits…

“My name is Obinna. I am from Njikoka in Anambra State. When i arrived Dubai and couldn’t get a job, i decided to think out of the box on what to do to make a living and one day, while in a local restaurant, a man came and placed an order. When the waiter came with the order, it was Chicken With Mashed Potato and Grilled Corn but the corn was not roasted the native Nigerian way as we do with coals.

“That was when the idea came and i decided to give it a try. I contacted a local farmer who supplied raw corn for me and started roasting them close to my neighborhood across the street.

“At first, people who passed by looked at me with curiosity as they had never seen anything of its kind up until one man approached me and i gave him one corn cob to taste. he liked it and the following day, invited 4 of his friends who bought and even took some home.”

According to Obinna, that day marked the beginning of his turnaround in the business.

The business according to him is the first of it’s kind in Dubai and in no time became a popular delicacy in the neighborhood with people especially Nigerians living there who want to have a taste of home patronise him on a daily basis.

When asked how much he makes as profit, Obinna smiled and said, “The profits are not bad. I sell each corn cob for about 5 to 8 Dirham depending on the size and on a very good day, i take about 60 to 80 Dirham (22$USD)(N8,000) home.”, he said.
